The last Monday in May is the traditional celebration of Memorial Day, a day to remember and honor soldiers that have died in the line of duty. Memorial Day was first officially claimed a day to remember soldiers who had fallen in the American Civil War by General John Logan, celebrated on May 30th, 1868. In 1873, the state of New York was the first state to recognize the day as a holiday. It wasn’t until after World War I that it became a day to recognize all American soldiers, finally becoming a National holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May in 1971.
While this holiday was initially a somber occasion, it has become a celebration over the years. A celebration of the life that Americans are afforded because of brave soldiers that have made the ultimate sacrifice. We celebrate it as the first official weekend of summer, with mini-vacations and backyard gatherings with friends and family. It is a time to reflect and appreciate the good things that are in our lives, thanks to those brave heroes.
